Okay, as of now in my country is Friday so you can start the re-reading and, once you're done, comment about it here.
Remember to put a spoiler warning if you're going to discuss anything that's about other manga or that happens post this two stories and try to be as talktive as you can!
It won't be that much fun if we all comment with a 'CLAMP did a nice work on this...' ^_-

Why did I also mention the printing of X Vol. 6? Guess who shows up in Vol 6 in person?
Yes, both the boys had been randomly mentioned, there's a pic of Subaru on the first page of Vol. 1 (in which he looks very much like TB Subaru and not like X Subaru) and one of the boys already had a bit of action in Vol. 5 but he wasn't shown... so it's interesting to see how, as soon as TB was ended, they showed up in X, as if there was some sort of continuity in this (it's also a smart commercial move to encourage TB readers to start reading X...).

PS: I know I'm being slow at sharing my opinion about Vol. 1... but I'm working on them! (me and my damn habit to talk too much and overanalyze things...)

Okay, so for the ones who want to do the rereading but also enjoy the drama cd I will post this. It’s a transcription of the dialogues in vol. 1 made by Tenno Yukie from which I cut the parts that weren’t included in the drama cd. However the drama cd and the manga differs in some points and in some other the drama cd includes parts that weren’t in the manga so this isn’t a perfect or complete translation of the drama cd. I wasn’t able to understand if the quotes were changed slightly and I wasn’t able to translate the new quotes (okay, I managed to translate the easiest ones…) but this still can help you follow what’s going on in the drama cd… and if you can help providing a translation for the missing parts and correcting the ones that are different in the cd I’ll love you forever…

Can you picture Seishiro's expression as he was distractly surfing for Yahoo! Japan and ended up finding this sale advertising?

It's too bad when he read it carefully he discovered they weren't selling Subarus but a poster promoting the selling of X Vol. 12... which had Subaru on its back...
I'm sure he wouldn't have minded to buy all the Subarus available... ^_-

... of course there's also the slight possibility he would have murdered the seller because he thinks all the Subarus available are already his own property... and nobody can sell around his stuffs.

Also, in case there's someone interested they're selling a Tokyo Babylon 2 script...

Okay, so since someone is interested I thought to how we could do it (mostly I'm following how the Code Geass rewatching is done since it's working rather well).

Indicative date for the re-reading is Friday.
Why? Because some have free time on weekends and some don't. So Friday is a day close to weekend but not weekend yet. This gives time to people who have no time on the weekends to do it on Friday, and to people who've time on the weekend to do it during it.
Of course, since I'm not at everyone's home, you can actually do the re-reading when you're most comfortable but I thought it would be nicer if we all were to do it around the same time.

Anyway...

On Friday I'll post on this journal a 'start the re-reading and commenting' post. Once you're done with your re-reading, it'll be nice if you'll comment your re-reading on it. Interesting topics to talk about: your overall opinion abut what you read (plot, art, characterization, pacing, whatever), things you missed the first time you read it, parallels you noticed reading with other things (TB related, CLAMP manga related, other series related), things you would have liked to see developed and CLAMP instead never paid attention at and whatever else stuck your fancy.

If in your comment you're going to talk of other series or volumes that are after the one we're re-reading, please put a SPOILER WARNING in your comment (maybe adding for what the spoiler warning is for).
I know, I know, we've probably already read TB more than once and the same can be said for almost all the CLAMP manga but writing a tiny warning shouldn't cost that much.

Since we can't all agree on everything, when opinions differ please try to at least agree to disagree.

In case someone is missing Tokyo Babylon material to re-read I'm uploading what I have on clamp2share, precisely on this post. I'll remind everyone clamp2share is a member only community so to see its post you've to join.

I know this is technically a Tokyo Babylon manga re-reading but I thought we could start from the stories printed on Shoten first (if you don't have them you can find them in the overmentioned post on clamp2share), since they are a prequel/demo version of the manga. Of course the manga and the stories in Shoten doesn't exactly follow the same continuity but well, they're interesting enough to talk about them (yes, I know we could do it after discussion of the 7 volumes of the manga but I thought to go in a chronological order).
JUST LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS

Also, I'm open to suggestions.

Since normally I stress you with my alternate opening I thoght it would be fair to stress you with other people alternate opening so here's the playlist I've made for them:

On a sidenote I'm getting tired of re-making the part I've written of 'The Things We Do'... though it seems I can't stop...

Okay so as some already know I'm also a fan of Code Geass and in the code_geass community are organizing a rerun of the series so I've been wondering... is there someone who follows this journal interested in a Tokyo Babylon re-read?
As in re-reading a volume each week and then commenting what stuck us as interesting, what we've completely forgotten, what we'll never forget, what we liked and disliked, what was a complete fail, assorted references that might come up with other CLAMP works and whatever stuck our fancy?

Just let me know if someone is interested!

Okay, so I was wandering through Japanese webs when I found one with the following datas:

Shirō Kamui (司狼 神威): 162cm* - Bloodtype: A
Nekoi Yuzuriha (猫依 護刃): 158cm*
Arisugawa Sorata (有洙川 空汰): 177cm*
Kishū Arashi (鬼咒 嵐): 161cm* - Birthday: 11/Nov
Sumeragi Subaru (皇 昴流): 173cm* (163cm* in TB) - Birthday: 19/Feb/1974 12:20* - Bloodtype: A
Aoki Seiichirō (蒼軌 征一狼): 176cm*
Kasumi Karen (夏澄 火煉): 165cm
Monō Fūma (桃生 封真): 178cm* - Bithday: 28/Feb/1982
Shiyū Kusanagi (志勇 草薙): 193cm*
Kigai Yūto (麒飼 遊人): 180cm*
Sakurazuka Seishirō (桜塚 星史郎): 183cm* - Death: 14/Nov - Bloodtype: B - Birthday: 22/Nov/1965 06:00* (but he pretends the date is 01/Apr/1965)
Kuzuki Kakyō (玖月 牙暁): 176cm - Birthday: 01/Mar
Nataku (那吒): 176cm*
Yatōji Satsuki (八頭司 颯姫): 160cm*
Sumeragi Hokuto (皇 北都): Death: 19/Sept - Birthday: 19/Feb/1974 06:00* - Bloodtype: A
Monō Kotori (桃生 小鳥): 154cm
Kanoe (庚): 168cm
Sōhi (蒼氷) and Hien (緋炎): 163cm
Hinoto (丁): 118cm
Imonoyama Nokoru (妹之山 残): Birthday: 16/June/1980 - Bloodtype: AB
Takamura Suō (鷹村 蘇芳): Birthday: 31/Mar* - Bloodtype: A
Ijyūin Akira (伊集院 玲): Birthday: 24/Dec* - Bloodtype: 0

I could check some heights and birthdays because they were in 'CLAMP In Wonderland 1&2 [Precious Edition] Book' or in 'CLAMP News' or in the manga (they're the one with the *) and they were right but what about the others? And the birthdays? And the death dates? (though is possible Japanese fans managed to calcuate the exact date using the info the manga gave) And the bloodtypes?

EDIT: According to jeldi's post (of which I shamefully forgot the existence) some other heights were confirmed in the X character cards give away in the Asuka magazine. So I've added * to the ones she confirmed in that post as well.

In short, does someone know the canon source for the overmentioned info (interviews, gadgets, cell sheets, books, CLAMP's old web, whatever...)?

In case someone wants to go search them for himself on Japanese webs height is 身高, bloodtype is 血型, Birthday is 生日 and death date is 祭日...

Assuming the overmentioned datas are right...Collapse )

Okay, so since I was fixing some mistakes in my Tokyo Babylon Glossary I ended up fixing also the mantra section with all the info I could find about them (sanskrit versions, translations, supposed use, use in TB...). Who's interested only in it can see it here. Who can contribute with info will be loved forever... Come on, there has to be a TB fan knowing sanskrit out there!

Mantra

Originally whose mantras were in Sanskrit. CLAMP used their transliterations in Japanese. I've seen other sources using different translitterations and sometimes even CLAMP didn't use the same translitteration for the same word (sowaka/sohaka) so don't trust this ones too much. It's also hell to find explanations/translations/applications for them so this part might be filled with errors.

Maybe someone already know this but I've been so lucky to have the chance to work with Yui-san (kanglin/shinta_sumeragi) and Jeldi-san jeldi to a Tokyo Babylon website named "Kawatteru Sakura" (or, if you prefer, 'Changing Sakura'... because you need Sakura in a Tb web! ^_-).
The web (over which we're still working so expect updates) is born and made due to our insane obsession love for TB and we hope it can be helpful in providing information and fan material to other TB lovers like us!

In case I've gotten you curious you can find it here:

Edit:
If you've trouble seeing something, find a link doesn't work, have suggestions or something else please drop your comments here:

Okay so in The Game We Play there's a nice chat about the past of the Sumeragi and Sakurazuka.
Here there's all canon says:

'Since 2000 years ago, our own Sumeragi family has protected the spiritualism of this Japan. As for that head of the family, now he stands at the top among Japan's Onmyouji, although their numbers have become few! The present-day supreme practitioner of Onmyoudou passed along continuously from Abe no Seimei.'
[Hokuto from TB OAV 1 - translation by jeldi-san *bow in thanks*]

{Do not trust the dvd subbing. Even I can understand they messed up in some parts...}

And also

'We of the Sumeragi clan has long since protected Japan spiritually, and the current 13th master, Sumeragi Subaru, is one of the few top Onmyouji now. Same amongst the Onmyouji is the heir of the Sakurazukamori who supports the history of Japan from the shadows. If Sumeragi is the surface, then Sakurazuka is the inside...

...

You, Sumeragi Subaru, the thirteenth master of we the Sumeragi clan who has stood at the top of the onmyoujis and protected the spirits of Japan since long in the past, you are one of the best, even of the previous family masters, no matter what happens.'

[Hokuto from TB Vol. 1 - translation by Tenno Yukie *bow in thanks*]

And in the end

'Since ancient times in Japan, Onmyouji have existed, presiding over festivals, moving the populace along the path of the gods, providing spiritual guidance, and even overseeing cremations. The Sumeragi and the Sakurazukamori are two of the greatest influences in the world of the Onmyouji. Even in modern day Japanese society, these two powers still play an important role. The development of the Onmyouji bound the Sumeragi to the light side (front), while the clan of assassins, the Sakurazukamori were the dark (reverse).'
[Narrator from Tokyo Babylon 1999 Drama cd - translation by greenapple2004 *bow in thanks*]

As a result there's a lot of rambling about really damn ancient past which turned out into searching:

  • Who in the world was the emperor of Japan in 9 B.C.?
Suinin-Tennō but he's into the friendly group of legendary emperors no one is truly sure existed or not.

  • Considering Subaru's the 13th head and assuming previous heads lived REALLY a lot of time when the Sumeragi's family might have gotten its name?
1999-(100*12+25)=774 end of Nara Period (Kōnin-Tennō 770-781) beginning of Heian Period (Kammu-Tennō 781-806)

  • Which is the closest Empress to that date?
Shōtoku-Tennō, who was Empress TWICE (she abdicaded once in favour of Junnin-Tennō then made him abdicate and took back the crown)

  • When Onmyoudo appeared in Japan?
If Google translator worked correctly around the seventh year of Keitai-Tennō's reign (512) though it began popular much later, under Suiko-Tennō's reign since her regent, Shōtoku-Taishi (yes, sound the same as Shōtoku-Tennō but it's written differently and he's a male...) seemed to have been influenced by it (but, as of now there's a discussion if Shōtoku-Taishi ever existed...). Onmyou-Ryo was founded in 676 under Temmu-Tennō.

  • When Abe no Seimei showed up?
    He lived around 921?-1005?

  • When Onmyoudo was banned as superstition?
Under Meiji-Tennō, around 1872. The ban was lifted after WWII.

  • What is the book 'Kinugyokutoshū' (金烏玉兎集/三国相伝陰陽輨轄簠簋内伝金烏玉兎集, "the collection book of the moon and the jade rabbit") about?
It seems it's about the calendar Onmyouji created...

Just in case someone else needs those informations and don't feel like being driven to insanity by translators enjines...
    In ShortCollapse )
